TAMPA, Fla. (WPEC) — The governor of the ‘free state’ of Florida may have been a bit disappointed before his Wednesday morning news conference at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

DeSantis talks about folks visiting and moving to Florida because he says the state he leads leaves choices up to people.

Watch as Gov. DeSantis approached his podium from the left and saw several students behind it had decided to wear masks.

He waved his hand at the students and started telling them, “You do not have to wear those masks. I mean, please take them off,” before he even got to them.

The governor continued, “Honestly, it’s not doing anything. We got to stop with this Covid theater,” and then pointing, he added, “So if you want to wear it, fine, but this is ridiculous.”

Then, he turned around at the podium and shook his head a few times as he shuffled papers in front of him.

A look at the news conference shows some students uncovered their faces, while others kept their faces covered with masks.

Near the end, he answered a reporter’s question about Covid, saying “Fauci is in the witness protection now” and “We all want to be like Florida.”

Gov. DeSantis is running for reelection in November.
