CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Two sheriff’s deputies made an amazing rescue and it all happened to be caught on their car’s dash-cam.
A man crashed and became trapped in his burning car, very early Saturday morning.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said neighbors heard the loud crash and called 911. The callers described the flames as being five-feet high and said they heard a man screaming for help.
Watch as deputies raced to the scene.
The area where they drove was totally dark — until they got to the scene of a car crash.
Then, it was lit up by flames, and a man was trapped inside his burning vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s office, the deputies ran to the victim but found his seat belt caught around his neck and upper body.
The heat from the flames were unbearable, so they couldn’t stay too close for too long.
The heroes ran back for a fire extinguisher and sprayed the area to get closer.
Eventually, they used a pocketknife to free the man and carry him far enough away to safety, with the help of a good Samaritan.

“You truly never know what the night will hold,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said. “The job of a deputy is to act bravely in the face of danger, regardless of what lies ahead. These young men did just that. I couldn’t be prouder.”
Fire/EMS workers provided medical care and took the victim to a trauma unit.
They say the victim is still in critical condition but expected to survive.
