WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — People unhappy with the price of gas can still like the latest trend. That trend has been downward for weeks, even through the long holiday weekend, and crude oil prices are the reason.

In Florida, AAA reports the average price of a regular gallon of gas on Wednesday was $4.515. That’s down 2 cents from Tuesday, 11 cents in the past week, 25 cents in the past month, but $1.50 up from last year.

AAA adds, West Palm Beach-Boca Raton is the most expensive part of the state, followed by Naples and Miami, and Melbourne-Titusville to our north is the third-least expensive.

Among our area counties on Wednesday:

  • Palm Beach: $4.715, down one-and-a-half cents since Monday and 23 cents since June 21,
  • Martin: $4.611, down almost 2 cents since Monday and 28 cents since June 21,
  • St. Lucie: $4.526, down 2 cents since Monday and 27 cents since June 21,
  • Indian River: $4.518, down 3 cents since Monday and 31 cents since June 21, and
  • Okeechobee: $4.548, down one-and-a-half cents since Monday and 26 cents since June 21.

Nationally, AAA reports the average price of a regular gallon of gas on Wednesday was $4.779. That’s down 2 cents from Tuesday, 11 cents in the past week. 11 cents in the past month, but up $1.65 from last year.

“Gas prices are being dragged lower by falling crude oil prices, which suffered steep losses Tuesday, on worries of a global economic slowdown,” AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said. “If these futures price drops hold, drivers could see Florida gas prices drift back below $4.10 per gallon. However, this is still an extremely volatile fuel market, and we’ve seen oil prices rebound so many times in the past several months.”
