EAST PALATKA, Fla. (CBS12) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis started his Thursday afternoon news conference with a critique of President Biden and the economy.

The governor — who’s running for reelection in November and is considered a possible presidential candidate in 2024 — credited staying open during the Covid-19 pandemic for Florida’s workforce growing faster than the nation’s.

He also blamed unemployment benefits given to people in other states, who were forced out of work during the pandemic, for helping drive inflation.

“What we’re doing in Florida is we are trying to do whatever we can to protect the people of this state against the ravages of Biden-flation,” he said.

Later, DeSantis mentioned he wants the case involving Florida’s new 15-week abortion restriction to go to the state Supreme Court. It happened while answering a reporter’s question.

The law went into effect on July 1, even though it was struck down days before. Reproductive health providers successfully argued the state constitution guarantees the right to the procedure.

On July 5, a judge in Tallahassee blocked the law, but Attorney General Ashley Moody appealed, which automatically put the law back into effect.

The governor spoke at Corky Bell’s Seafood at Gator Landing in East Palatka, Putnam County, and discussed infrastructure in the area.

Dane Eagle, secretary of the state Department of Economic Opportunity, joined him.
