HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A South Florida teacher has been released from jail — and “reassigned” away from a classroom — for having an improper relationship with a student.

Lavelle Gordon, 29, worked at Hallandale High School since January 2021, teaching English and journalism, and administrators just learned about the situation earlier this month.

According to the arrest report, they asked Gordon’s students to write about an unrelated “disruptive incident” that happened Oct. 12 in his class.

Instead, dozens of students — 43, in fact — wrote about seeing inappropriate behavior, such as “being touchy” with the student, seeing them “always playing around with each other and hugging,” and having “very ‘intimate moments.’”

The arrest report said, “They witnessed Mr. Gordon and this female student play fighting, hugging below the waist, hugging for an extended period of time and drinking from the same bottle.”

Then, an assistant principal met with the girl and her parents. After that, Gordon was told to stay away indefinitely.

At first, the girl denied everything, but her mother checked her phone and found a TikTok video of her daughter kissing Gordon at a park.

A Broward Sheriff’s Office detective said the girl’s father mentioned attendance issues and tried to reach someone in the school’s office. He ended up getting Gordon, who said he worked there and would fix things.

That arrest report also said the girl told a detective she met Gordon in March, and he asked her to discuss yearbook pictures in his class.

She said he passed her a note about “flirting with other boys.”

Then, this past spring, they texted a lot and met up outside of school.

A few times, they went to a club in Miami and the arrest report said they had sexual conduct there once.

It also said that happened at his home in Pembroke Pines.

“Victim stated that last Thursday (10/13/22), the football game got canceled so she asked Mr. Gordon, who was already at school for a ride home,” the arrest report detailed. “Instead of going to her house, he took her to his house in Pembroke Pines, FL. Victim stated that no one was home at his house. They went into his bedroom where victim laid down because her stomach was hurting. They began kissing as he rubbed her stomach, and she rubbed his back. Mr. Gordon asked if she wanted it and victim stated okay Afterward, Mr. Gordon drove her home.”

Gordon was arrested Sunday and charged with having sex with a student as an authority figure.

He was released in lieu of $75,000 bond, three days later, Wednesday night. He cannot have contact with any minors.
