SALT LAKE CITY (TND) — A loaded gun and three rounds of ammunition were found in the carry-on luggage of a man scheduled to fly last week.

The Transportation Security Administration announced officers made the discovery during routine X-ray screening last Wednesday afternoon, March 1, at a security checkpoint in Salt Lake City.

The feds called the city’s airport police and they spoke to the gun owner.

Eventually, they let him onto his flight to Phoenix but without his foldable, single-shot .22 caliber Trailblazaer LifeCard pistol.

No decision has been made on possible charges. According to the TSA, the recommended civil penalty for a firearm starts at $2,050 and can go up to $14,950 per violation.

Firearms can be taken on planes if they’re unloaded, packed in a locked, hard-sided case, and placed in checked baggage.

Ammunition, firearm parts, and any type of replica must also be checked. Click here for details.

The feds say passengers should check with their airline when booking and then go to the airline ticket counter at the airport.

Unfortunately, some travelers continue to ignore that advice,” TSA Federal Security Director for Utah Matt Davis said. “Wednesday’s firearm discovery at SLC proves that their attention to detail and commitment to screening one bag, one traveler at a time is key to ensuring that security threats do not make it into the cabin of an aircraft.”
