Lithium, toilet don’t mix: 3 middle school students charged after toxic chemical reaction

CATSKILL, N.Y. (TND) — Three middle school students are in trouble after the fire department got “a report of some type of smoke in a bathroom” on Tuesday.

No, they weren’t smoking any type of cigarettes.

Authorities in Green County, N.Y., south of Albany, said their investigation found, “Students had placed lithium from common household batteries into a toilet, causing a chemical reaction damaging the toilet and releasing toxic fumes.”

The sheriff’s office arrested the three Catskill Middle School students: a 13 year old and two 12 year olds.

The kids face serious charges of arson, criminal mischief, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, and unlawful possession of noxious material.

They were released to their parents.
