Carjacking suspect foiled by stick shift, Apple AirTags

CHICAGO (TND) — There are stupid criminals, and then there are others who may not have thought things through.

Like Andrew Moran. Twice.

CWB Chicago reported he was arrested for trying to carjack a woman who was sitting in her car, in a strip mall, last Friday.

Prosecutors said he had one hand in his jacket pocket and he knocked on the driver’s door with the other and told her he “needed” the car.

The woman thought he was holding a gun in his pocket, so she got out and called the police from a store.

But Moran didn’t get far. In fact, he didn’t get anywhere, except on foot.

The woman’s Audi A3 is a stick shift and the 25-year-old suspect didn’t know how to drive one.

He stopped trying to go and ran away as police approached, but made another mistake in those tense moments.

He had the victim’s keys and they had an Apple AirTag attached.

Chicago police knew he boarded a commuter train. They also boarded and arrested him.

But wait. There’s more.

Prosecutors said Moran spit in one officer’s face and kicked others, both during his arrest and again at the police station.

He’s charged with vehicular hijacking and aggravated battery of peace officers and is being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
