BROCKTON, Mass. (TND) — Authorities say they captured the man who took off and dragged a Massachusetts state trooper during a traffic stop.
Also, they released video of that terrifying scene from the trooper’s dashcam.
State Police said the trooper pulled over Derek Lobo’s Mercedes for “motor vehicle violations,” early Thursday evening.
The video shows the driver’s door open and two troopers talking to the suspect.
One trooper puts his head down for a closer look inside. Then, the other does, and the car suddenly takes off.
The trooper in the back pulls away but the closer trooper, with his head inside the vehicle, is taken along with the car.
Within seconds, he falls out of the escaping Mercedes, landing in the middle of Montello Street.
The unnamed trooper manages to get up and run back to the patrol car. Police said he suffered minor injuries, and they asked anyone seeing Lobo to call the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section.
Lobo, 31, was captured in a nearby home, the next day.
In fact, police said, “The Trooper who actually placed him in custody was the Troop D CAT member who was dragged by the suspect.”
Lobo was booked on 11 charges:
- Assault and battery on a police officer;
- Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon;
- Trafficking in Fentanyl, more than 10 grams;
- Negligent operation of a motor vehicle;
- Failure to stop for police;
- Unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle;
- Number plate violation;
- No inspection sticker;
- Window tint violation; and
- Not in possession of a license.
His bail was set at $5,000 plus a standard $40 bail fee.
