WASHINGTON (TND) — New numbers are in from the Transportation Security Administration and the agency is on pace to confiscate more weapons from potential flyers at airports this year than last.

The TSA reports during the first three quarters of 2023, through September, transportation security officers intercepted 5,072 firearms at security checkpoints.

Last year, the agency prevented 6,542 firearms from getting onboard aircraft, and that was a record.

In the third quarter, from July to September, officers stopped 1,820 firearms at checkpoints, which is an average of 19.8 firearms per day. In addition, more than 94% of those firearms were loaded.

“Passengers may travel with a firearm, but it must be in their checked baggage,” TSA administrator David Pekoske said. “Firearms are only permitted in checked baggage, unloaded in a locked hard-sided case, and must be declared to the airline when checking the bag at the ticket counter.

”Firearms are prohibited at security checkpoints, in the secure area of an airport, or in the passenger cabin of an aircraft even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction,” he added.

The TSA calls local law enforcement to safely unload and take the weapons it finds. What local authorities do to the passengers depends on local law.

The TSA can fine passengers almost $15,000 and take away TSA PreCheck eligibility for five years.
