Woman confessed to strangling her 8-year-old son, driving around with body for hours, police say

HIALEAH, Fla. (TND) — A woman drove her son to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, and now she’s facing a first-degree murder charge.

Police near Miami said Shaneka Ann McKinzie, 36, drove her eight-year-old son to Hialeah Hospital near Miami on Nov. 14.

According to the arrest report, the boy arrived “in her personal vehicle from an unknown location.”

The next day, the medical examiner “determined that the victim’s cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation and ruled the manner of death as homicide.”

Then, police wrote, “The defendant provided a detailed audio/video confession. The defendant described planning to kill the victim and thinking of doing it for the past two days.

“The defendant stated that in an unknown location, while the victim was asleep in the rear passenger seat, she utilized a black tablecloth to suffocate and strangle the victim. Moments later, when the victim stopped struggling and was rendered unconscious, the defendant released the tablecloth.

“Next, the defendant proceeded to conduct several errands throughout Miami-Dade County, Florida. Several hours later, the defendant drove the victim to Hialeah Hospital.”

McKinzie is being held without bail.
