BRONX, N.Y. (TND) — Firefighters in New York have been working to put out a stubborn five-alarm fire that broke out overnight in the Bronx.

The alarms went off at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in a building in the Kingsbridge neighborhood that has five businesses including a deli.

“Our units found heavy fire conditions in multiple stores,” Asst. Chief Thomas Currao explained. “We originally tried an interior attack and got into a couple of stores but had to transition to an exterior attack due to the volume and body of fire.”

Officials blamed multiple ceilings put up over time as a reason putting out the fire has been so tough.

No homes had to be evacuated but one person living behind the businesses suffered minor smoke inhalation.

An investigation into the cause of the fire won’t start until it’s out, and fire officials said that’ll be a “prolonged operation.”

They had about 200 fire and emergency workers and 44 pieces of apparatus at the scene, early Wednesday morning.
