PHOENIX (TND) — A girl was found dead in a dumpster on Christmas Eve and her mother is charged with her murder.

Phoenix police responded to the scene, Sunday evening, and officers reported finding “the remains of a young female.”

Detectives looked for evidence and spoke to witnesses but the next day, they got a tip that “the young child possibly died from injuries stemming from an assault by” her mother, Sophia Simmons, who then “disposed” of the body in a dumpster.

They found Simmons’ home, got a search warrant, and reported finding “evidence of someone attempting to clean a crime scene.

“Simmons was not home at the time, but detectives quickly learned she was on the I-10 heading back to Arizona. She was located and detained by detectives in Tonopah,” about 50 miles west of Phoenix.
