BAILEY’S CROSSROADS, Va. (TND) — The man who killed a coworker in the parking garage of the Target store where they worked has been sentenced to prison, but not before making a threat at the hearing.

Bazen Berhe “stabbed and bludgeoned” 58-year-old janitor Hernan Leiva “for taking Berhe’s lunch from the office fridge,” according to the commonwealth’s attorney outside Washington, D.C.

The lunch incident happened on April 14, 2021, and prosecutors said the next day, “Berhe purchased a hammer and two knives while leaving his shift” and reportedly “told detectives that he spent the following day, April 16, ‘training for the murder.’”

Then, early the next morning, when Leiva arrived, Berhe killed him and escaped.

Fairfax County police reported finding Leiva at about 3:30 a.m., “suffering from apparent stab wounds and blunt force trauma to his upper body.”

He was pronounced dead at the scene, where “detectives recovered knives and a hammer,” and where Berhe returned to turn himself in.

Berhe confessed immediately but it wasn’t until two-and-a-half years later — in October 2023 — he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.

At Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors said the 25-year-old “threatened to kill or hurt other people if he was not given the harshest possible sentence.”

The judge gave him 100 years in prison, with 30 years suspended, so Berhe will serve 70 years.
