MASCOTTE, Fla. – A family dinner was interrupted when one of the children had to go to the bathroom, and their father was charged with three felonies before the night ended.
UPDATE: Prosecutors decided not to pursue any of the criminal charges, three weeks after the alleged incident.
The mother of Antonio Tyone Chatman’s three children told police in Florida
“one of their children needed to use the bathroom, so she asked the arrestee to take the juvenile [name] outside so [pronoun] could relieve [him- or herself].”
The child’s age and gender are redacted on the arrest report from the evening of Sept. 20.
“She further stated that the arrestee became frustrated,” it continued, “and began a verbal argument over what he perceived to be an interruption to eating dinner.
“She advised that the arrestee described the juvenile as a ‘crybaby’ and ‘tossed’ the upset juvenile away from him, causing [him or her] to fall on [his or her] side on the kitchen floor.”
The argument escalated and the mother reported to police,
Chatman “reached his hand into the front pocket of his basketball shorts and she observed his right hand grasping the grip of his firearm, which she described as a green 9mm handgun.”
The arrest report explained, “She could see the grip of the handgun slightly protruding out of his pocket and immediately recognized it as the handgun that he would routinely keep physically on his person.”
Then, with hand on gun, she said he told her, “Since you’ve been going through so much, just let me put you out of your misery.”
She said he never took the gun out of his pocket, but “his actions and words made her fear for her safety.”
At that point, the mother said she “quickly gathered” the children, took them outside, “and began placing them into the back seat of her” SUV, but Chatman “followed her” and their argument “escalated into a physical altercation” since he didn’t want her to leave with the kids.
She told police that Chatman – who’s listed as 5’11” tall and weighing 300 lbs. – “grabbed her left arm” just outside the SUV “and advised her that she ‘wasn’t taking the kids anywhere.’
“He then removed the three children from the vehicle and ushered them back into the residence,” the arrest report said.
But, the mother drove off alone and called 911.
“She then returned to the incident location to meet with law enforcement in the company of a family member in an attempt to retrieve the juveniles.”
Police wrote, “While describing the battery, she rolled up her left shirt sleeve, at which time the area of her upper arm appeared noticeably red. … No marks were observed on any of the three juveniles involved in the incident.”
Police said Chatman “admitted to engaging in a verbal dispute with [the mother], as well as grabbing her by the arm, but denied that a firearm was involved.
“He made no mention of ‘tossing’ the juvenile while arguing in the kitchen.”
Finally, police reported finding “a green 9mm ‘Canik’ model ‘PP9’ handgun … in the top drawer of a dresser that was located inside the closet of the master bedroom.
“It housed a loaded magazine with 18 unspent rounds of 9mm ammunition, as well as one unspent round of 9mm ammunition in the chamber of the firearm.”

Chatman, 25, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse, interference with custody – which are all felonies – and simple battery.
He spent four full days behind bars before his release in lieu of $54,000 bond.
He was ordered to have no contact with any of the alleged victims and then pleaded not guilty to all charges.
