UMATILLA, Fla. – A man’s probation violations came back to haunt him when he was pulled over in a school zone.

Police in Florida said Luis Angel Mayorga was driving an SUV “at 27 mph in a posted 15 mph zone” on the morning of Sept. 17.

“I conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle,” an officer wrote in the arrest report, and during a routine “check of the defendant’s license through dispatch, I was advised that the defendant had a suspended license from 2022 for criminal failure to pay.

“I was also advised that he had a warrant out of Volusia County for reckless driving.

“When asked about his license, he advised it was better for him to get in trouble rather than his mother, who[se] license is also suspended.”

Mayorga was arrested for knowingly driving with a suspended license and he spent six days in jail before he was returned to Volusia County.

His trouble there started in December 2020 when a police sergeant on patrol drove past a parking lot at about 3 a.m. and noticed his car “with the windows fogged up, backed into a parking spot.

“[The sergeant] drove around the block and noticed that the vehicle was exiting the parking lot.”

The arrest report describes what happened when Mayorga approached three intersections.

At the first, “The vehicle did not come to a complete stop and made a right turn.”

That wasn’t all.

“The right rear wheel of the vehicle drove onto the raised curb while making the turn,” the sergeant reported.

At the second intersection, “The vehicle passed the stop bar; however, it did come to a stop.”

And at the third, “The vehicle had a green light; however, the vehicle came to a stop at the green light.”

Finally, the sergeant made a traffic stop and wrote he “instantly could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle.

“[The sergeant] asked the defendant if he had been drinking and got a response that he has had nothing to drink.

“[The sergeant] noticed that the defendant had bloodshot and glassy eyes. The defendant also had slurred speech while talking to [the sergeant].

“[The sergeant] asked the defendant if he was willing to complete some field sobriety exercises.

“The defendant responded ‘sure why not.’”

The arrest report said Mayorga failed the Walk and Turn, One Leg Stance, and Finger to Nose, and “was transported to the Deland Police Department to complete a breath test [but] refused to provide a breath sample.”

Five months later, the case went to court and Mayorga pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of reckless driving.

He was sentenced to a year of probation and 75 hours of community service. He also had to take an alcohol safety education course and attend a victim awareness program.

Unfortunately, Mayorga didn’t take the course or attend the program. His violation report also said he missed three of five appointments with his probation officer, and owed nearly $2,000.

Then came his arrest for speeding in a school zone, and his transfer to Volusia County.

Now, Mayorga is being held without bond, and his arraignment is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 7.
