Repeat offender charged with 2 new felonies, then released after 2 hours in jail

EUSTIS, Fla. – A career criminal was quickly released from jail on bond after his latest run-in with the law.

Lake County deputies in Florida got a license plate reader alert about a stolen blue Porsche entering from Volusia County on Sept. 17, and found it at a gas station.

Follow-up, Jan. 17, 2025: Felon freed after 4 new criminal counts he was facing disappear without explanation.

They said the driver, Barry Douglas Aumack, “stated that he did not know that the vehicle was stolen.

“He advised deputies that he borrowed the car from his daughter’s boyfriend, [name], to go to a medical appointment in Deland.

“Barry mentioned that the passenger [with him] normally takes him to his medical appointments, but his vehicle was out of gas.”

Aumack was arrested for grand theft and petit theft, but he’d soon be facing another serious charge after a search of the Porsche.

“A deputy located a crystal-like substance inside a pill bottle prescribed to Barry,” the arrest report said. “The pill bottle was located inside a black bag.

“After field-testing the crystal-like substance with LCSO-issued field test kits, the substance tested positive for methamphetamine.”

It added, Aumack denied the substance was his, “but knew it was in the center console, and Barry placed it inside the pill bottle.”

He was charged with possession of methamphetamine, in addition to the theft charges.

Aumack’s bond was set at $6,000 and he was released after two hours and 16 minutes in jail.

Aumack, 64, had already served two sentences in state prison for crimes in Pasco County.

He was locked up from 2005 to 2010 for crimes including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and grand theft. Then, he was returned from 2011 to 2014 on two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

In 2019, he was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and in 2021, he served three months for a probation violation stemming from that charge.

His arrest report from July 2022 said Aumack was pulled over for running a stop sign, then “stuck his head out the window and yelled, ‘Why did you pull me over!’

“I requested the driver’s driver license, registration, and proof of insurance,” the officer wrote.

But, “The driver then continued yelling, stating he was not going to provide me any information, and that he was going to contact his lawyer.

“The driver then advised he was not going to speak with me anymore, and rolled up his window. The driver then requested [a] supervisor.”

The report said a sergeant “arrived on scene shortly after” but Aumack “did not acknowledge [the sergeant].

“[The sergeant] attempted to get the driver to cooperate by ordering the driver to give officers his information.

“The driver proceeded to talk with a person on the phone, ignoring officers.

“I then opened the driver door and ordered the driver to step out of the vehicle.

“I grabbed the driver by his left wrist and elbow, and ordered him a second time to get out of the car.

“The driver then tensed his arm up, pulling away from me, and he was then redirected to the ground and secured into handcuffs.

“The driver then began bleeding from his left eyebrow and EMS was requested for the injury.”

Aumack asked to be taken to the hospital and he was put in an ambulance. No reason was given for the sling he was wearing in his booking photo.

Then, “[A corporal] arrived on scene and deployed his K9 partner Mya on the vehicle, and advised of a positive alert.

“A probable cause search” reportedly “revealed an eyeglass case in the center console area,” with two pills, a glass pipe, and a crystal-like substance inside.

Authorities said the pills tested positive for MDMA and everything else was methamphetamine.

Aumack was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of MDMA, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting without violence. He went to the hospital and then to jail, where he was released on bond after 12 hours.

His only other arrest since then took place just nine days later, before his arraignment, and he served a month-and-a-half.

That two-year-old case is still winding its way through the justice system.
