Follow-up Friday: Felon freed after 4 new criminal counts he was facing disappear without explanation

LEESBURG, Fla. – It’s not every day a repeat offender gets arrested, and then gets good news – a lot of good news – but that’s what happened this week to a felon who was facing four felony charges from the past few years.

Barry Douglas Aumack was arrested on a warrant on Monday, Jan. 13, after his bond was revoked on two charges, and for failure to appear on four other charges.

Those charges, in separate cases, were all dropped, and Aumack was freed 24 hours and 7 minutes after he was booked.

Aumack became wanted after a quick court hearing in Florida last month. It stemmed from July 2022, when Aumack was booked wearing a sling, and had blood on both sides of his face.

The arrest report said Aumack was pulled over for running a stop sign, then “stuck his head out the window and yelled, ‘Why did you pull me over!’”

He reportedly didn’t stop.

“The driver then continued yelling,” the officer wrote, “stating he was not going to provide me any information, and that he was going to contact his lawyer.

“The driver then advised he was not going to speak with me anymore, and rolled up his window. The driver then requested [a] supervisor.”

Later, “I then opened the driver door and ordered the driver to step out of the vehicle.

“I grabbed the driver by his left wrist and elbow, and ordered him a second time to get out of the car.

“The driver then tensed his arm up, pulling away from me, and he was then redirected to the ground and secured into handcuffs.

“The driver then began bleeding from his left eyebrow and EMS was requested for the injury.”

Aumack went to the hospital, but a K9 officer showed up, “deployed his K9 partner Mya on the vehicle, and advised of a positive alert.” That led to a probable cause search and “an eyeglass case in the center console area,” with two pills, a glass pipe, and a crystal-like substance inside.

Aumack was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of MDMA, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting without violence, and he was released on bond after 12 hours.

Almost two-and-a-half years later, in a four-minute court hearing on Dec. 10, 2024, Aumack’s lawyer showed up but without her client, so the judge revoked Aumack’s bond on the four charges, forfeited it all except for the MDMA charge, and issued an arrest warrant.

A month later, on Jan. 13, he was arrested. It was an eventful afternoon for Aumack.

He was booked at 12:26, according to the sheriff’s office.

Then, in a document filed with the court clerk at 12:44, prosecutors had their say, without explanation.

“This case has been resolved without prosecution,” prosecutors wrote, without mentioning any other party.

Aumack’s other case started with his arrest this past September. Authorities said he was driving a stolen blue Porsche and passed a license plate reader. That alerted deputies, and they found Aumack and the car at a gas station.

Aumack “stated that he did not know that the vehicle was stolen,” his arrest report said. “He advised deputies that he borrowed the car from his daughter’s boyfriend, [name], to go to a medical appointment in Deland. Barry mentioned that the passenger [with him] normally takes him to his medical appointments, but his vehicle was out of gas.”

That got him charged with grand theft and petit theft.

Then, authorities searched the car and reported finding “a crystal-like substance inside a pill bottle prescribed to Barry. The pill bottle was located inside a black bag. After field-testing the crystal-like substance with LCSO-issued field test kits, the substance tested positive for methamphetamine.”

It added, Aumack denied the substance was his, “but knew it was in the center console, and Barry placed it inside the pill bottle,” so he was charged with possession of methamphetamine.

Aumack was released on bond after just two hours in jail. A month later, he pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Then, on Jan. 3, while still out on bond, prosecutors sent a vague announcement to the court regarding the petit theft misdemeanor: “Other legal issues prevent the state from pursuing this charge.”

And this past Tuesday, the day after Aumack’s arrest, they sent a similar announcement without explanation concerning the other charges, which were felonies.

It was e-filed at 10:38 a.m. Aumack, 65, was released at 12:33 p.m., and got his bond back on three of the four charges.
