Man charged with attacking his father and brother with metal axe, then found lying on floor unclothed

OCALA, Fla. – The deputy responding to this call “was flagged down” by two men “who were visibly injured — and had blood on their faces, arms, and legs” — and were “in a vehicle on the side of the road.”

They “did not speak much English,” the arrest report from the evening of Sept. 22 in Florida said, “but were able to state that they were in a fight with a suspect who was not on scene.”

The suspect was a close relative.

“[The suspect’s brother] was in the driver’s seat of a silver Honda SUV,” the report continued, “[and the father] was in the passenger seat. The vehicle was pulled onto the side of the road with the hazard lights on, and the vehicle was missing the front bumper.

“[The father] had apparent sharp force injuries to his head above his left ear area, a sharp force injury to his hand, and blood on his face and arms. There was an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath, and he was not answering questions with anything other than ‘I don’t know.’ [The father] was promptly trauma-alerted by Marion County Fire Rescue to [the hospital].

“[The brother] sustained injuries to his hands and leg. He provided his name and date of birth, but continued to say that he does not know where the incident occurred, or who did it. His breath smelled of an alcoholic beverage. He was only repeating ‘I don’t know, people are crazy.’

“I made contact with [a K9 deputy] to assist with translation. [The deputy] explained that [the brother] told him that his brother ‘Eduardo Gonzelez’ was the suspect that attacked him and his father [name] with an axe. He said that Eduardo just jumped up and attacked them unprovoked. [The brother] also stated that Eduardo ‘has problems.’ [The brother] was also transported to [the hospital].”

At the hospital, the arrest report said, “[The translating deputy] was able to confirm with [the brother] that Eduardo Alexis Gonzalez Cristales was the person who injured both himself and [the father].”

Also, “[The brother] confirmed that the attack happened in the home they all share just prior to his 911 call.

And, “[The brother] stated that when they entered the home, they were all in the living room and the suspect got up and started attacking him.

“[The brother] said the suspect was attempting to hit him in the torso with the axe, but [the father] got in between them and [the father] then got hit in the head with the axe.

“[The brother] explained that during the altercation, the suspect cut his leg and hand with the axe, and cut [the father’s] hand with the axe, as well.

“A struggle ensued. Then, [the brother] and [the father] fled the home in the Honda SUV while calling 911.”

While the victims went to the hospital, deputies went to the home, which was a trailer, and found the front door wide open, “and a trail of blood on the stairs leading up to the trailer.

“Due to exigency, deputies entered the trailer and located the suspect lying on the floor of a bedroom in the trailer unclothed.

“He was displaying signs of alcohol intoxication such as bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and an intense odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. He did not appear physically injured but was transported to [another hospital] to be medically cleared.

“When deputies entered the residence, they observed a metal axe with blood on it sitting on a child’s playset just inside of the front door, and large amounts of blood in the living room.”

But there was more to this story. It happened earlier that evening, before the family feud, and the arrest report called it “a related call for service.”

Eduardo Alexis Gonzalez was charged with 2 counts of domestic aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief property damage of $1,000 or more, Sept. 23, 2024. (Marion Co. Sheriff’s Office)

At this location, “an altercation where property damage occurred” took place, and “Alexis Gonzalez was named as the suspect.”

According to the report, “Alexis was said to have left that scene with [his brother] and [his father] in a Honda SUV with no front bumper, [and] ‘Alexis’ was identified as Eduardo Alexis Gonzalez Cristales. Probable cause for the arrest of Eduardo Alexis Gonzalez Cristales was developed in reference to the criminal mischief case,” and he’d face yet another criminal charge.

“The victims both work as laborers on various farms,” the report said, and they were “in stable condition but still hospitalized.” Their ages were not released.

Eduardo Gonzalez, 21, was reportedly “alert and oriented,” and he’d soon be booked on two counts of domestic aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and with criminal mischief property damage of $1,000 or more.

His bond was set at $65,000 and he has not yet been released from jail.
