TAVARES, Fla. – Authorities in Florida weren’t playing when they showed up at the home of a man watching football with his son and stepson, “in reference to a possible shooting.”

The call came from Steven Jay Williams’ stepson who was actually at a gas station after 2 a.m. on Sept. 29.

“I met with [the stepson],” a deputy wrote, “who advised that him and his stepbrother [name] were down visiting his stepdad, Steven, from Alabama and they were watching football” at Steven’s home.

“He stated Steven had been drinking and at one point went into his bedroom [and] grabbed a firearm described as a black semi-auto pistol.

“He advised Steven then came out to them [and] stated he wanted to show them what not to do.

“He advised, Steven began waving the firearm around in the air, ultimately firing one shot. [The stepson] stated when the shot was fired, it went right passed [sic] his head. He advised Steven then went back into the bedroom.

“[The stepson] advised him and [the son] then left the residence to call 911.

“[The stepson] also stated Steven was calling him, trying to get them to come back, saying he gave his gun to someone in a white car to take somewhere else.

“Neither [the stepson] nor [the son] wished to provide a written statement.”

That’s when deputies went to Williams’ home.

The arrest report said he told them, “While they were inside watching football, he got his firearm and was trying to show them something when he accidentally pulled the trigger, discharging the firearm.

“He stated the projectile went through two walls and through an exterior window.

“He advised after his son and stepson left, he gave the firearm and shell casing to his girlfriend, asking her to take it to her house.”

The exterior window led to the neighbor’s home, and deputies said, “On the exterior of the residence was a hole that appeared to be from a projectile from a firearm.

“Inside the residence, the projectile had struck a multiple paint can [sic] causing them to fall, then into another wall in the bathroom.

“The projectile entered the wall, lodging into the wall where it was unable to be recovered.”

Finally, Williams’ girlfriend reportedly told deputies “while traveling to her residence from Steven’s, she threw the spent shell casing out her window to dispose of it, at Steven’s request.”

Deputies apparently went to her home “where a Highpoint 40 caliber serial [number] and seven live 40 caliber round were located and collected. The firearm matched the description provided by [the stepson].

“A criminal history was ran for Steven,” the arrest report said, “revealing he had two previous felony convictions; therefore, was unable to lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition.”

Online records from Florida did not list Williams’ crimes since he had not served prison time in the state.

Williams, 61, was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a felon in possession of ammunition. They’re both felonies.

He was also charged with culpable negligence for “discharging a firearm with wanton disregard for human life for safety,” just a misdemeanor for the original shooting.

His bail was set at $6,000 and he was released after nine hours in jail.
