CLERMONT, Fla. – A senior citizen is charged with battery on his mother-in-law, and the trouble started when she told him the dog had an accident on the floor.
Both the suspect and his wife, in Florida, called 911 on the morning of Sept. 29.
James Ian Corbett told dispatch “there was a crazy woman locked in a room,” the arrest report said, but his wife got “a call from her mother stating that her son-in-law battered her, and is going crazy.”
Her mother lives with the couple, and her age is not part of the arrest report.
“I immediately observed that [the victim] had a large raised bump with bruising on her forehead,” a police officer wrote. “[The victim] stated that she woke up this morning and noticed that James’ dog had urinated on the floor in front of her bedroom.
“[The victim] stated that she notified James to clean up the urine, which caused James to become upset and yell obscenities.
“[The victim] stated that she began cleaning the urine, when James approached her and continued to yell.
“[The victim] advised that James punched her in the forehead and pushed her back. [The victim] pointed to her forehead and a scratch on her right forearm that she sustained from the altercation.
“[The victim] advised that she locked herself in her room and James began to forcefully attempt to open the door and yell obscenities. [The victim] immediately notified [her daughter, who wasn’t home] of the incident.
“[The victim] stated that James was up all night drinking and became upset when she woke him up.”
The victim’s daughter arrived and told police “she was dog-sitting at the time the incident took place.
“[She] confirmed that [the victim] did not suffer from any mental illness or dementia. [She] advised that she received a concerning call from [her mother] claiming that James hit her. [She] stated that James is ‘verbally abusive’ and a heavy drinker.
“[The victim] completed a sworn and written statement indicating her intent to prosecute. [The victim] was unable to complete the narrative portion due to being shaken up from the incident.
“[The victim] refused to have EMS respond to the scene,” despite her injuries.
Finally, the officer wrote the suspect called the victim
“a ‘crazy b****’ who hit herself. James stated that [the victim] was yelling due to his dog urinating on the floor. James advised that [the victim] then locked herself in the room.
“I asked James if he observed [his mother-in-law] fall, to which he stated no. I asked James if he knew how [the victim] sustained the injury to her forehead.
“James advised that [the victim’s] injuries were there prior to the argument. I confirmed with [his wife], who stated that [her mother] did not have any injuries to her forehead last night when she last saw her.”
James Corbett, 68, was arrested for battery on a person 65 or older.
His bond was set at $2,000 and he was released after 31 hours in jail.
